As you will come to learn, I write from my heart with passion. I am a 47 year-old bi-racial woman, a proud Gen-Xer who loves music from the past, present and future. I’ve raised two boys and have been married for 23 years to a man from New Orleans. I decided to retire from radio in 2024 after 20 years. I freelance and I’m a housewife, but unless you have unlimited money, that lifestyle isn’t as glamorous as the reality shows make it seem.
Like most people, I’m trying to find my footing. I no longer have interest in working for anyone and I want to create something that brings to life my imprint in a physical way, that will move people, help them or change their perspective. This is why I started a Substack, to find my community and build.
My interests lie in pop, hip-hop, R&B, and country music, also the music business. Growing up in the 80s and 90s, I was blessed to witness firsthand mega stars like Michael Jackson, Prince, Madonna, Whitney Houston, George Michael, Lil Wayne, Janet Jackson, Beyoncé, Garth Brooks, Shania Twain, and others.
Spending endless hours in my room as an only child, the artists and their music kept me company. The disk jockeys, as they used to be called, were my best friends that were there for me everyday. Casey Kasem, Tom Joyner, Kidd Kraddick, Barbie Doll Peaches, and Russ Parr. I never knew at the time I would become one of them (we’ll discuss that in another post).
Elsewhere I dabble in culture conversations and I value my unique prospective and the ability to bring both a black and white angle to any conversation. I was adopted at three months of age by White parents in 1977. They had no clue about Black culture or how to raise a bi-racial child but they had love.
It was my father that introduced music to me. My mother, who stayed at home, helped me with school work until she couldn’t understand the homework anymore and cooked me three meals a day. They did their best, yes, life was good and I had everything I needed. But even with all the love they had, still there would be things they didn’t understand and experiences I would have to learn on my own.
So I hope this helps you to understand me better and I plan on sharing more with you in upcoming posts. If anything resonates with you I would love to hear from you. Until next time let the music play - Kiki
